Spring Garden Preschool exists as one of the ministries of State Street United Methodist Church.  Our primary focus is a Christian Environment, Socialization, and Self-Esteem.  We have an open door policy which enables you to contact the church staff and preschool staff at any time.  We have been in operation since 1986 and pride ourselves as a loving, nurturing ministry.  We provide a safe place to leave your child and have a well-trained staff who enjoys working with children.

Beginning Fall 2014, SGPS will begin incorporating the HighScope Curriculum into our current program.  This method will be complimentary to curriculum that is in place and it is one of the most often used in the public school systems.

HighScope allows young children to build or “construct” their knowledge of the world.  Learning is not simply a process of adults giving information to chidren.  In a HighScope setting, children participate actively in the learning process.  They discover things through direct experience with people, objects, events and ideas.  Preschoolers also make plans and follow through on thier interests and intentions.  Activities are both child initiated and developmently appropriate.  This process allows our staff and students to be partners in shaping the learning experience.  All materials regarding this learning approach are available for parental review.  The HighScope Curriculum meets all state standards, national core standards, Head Start Outcome standards, and NAEYC standards.

The HighScope Curriculum also highlights seven different components of studies to complement the Program.  This includes Creative Arts; Language, Literacy and Communication; Mathematics; Physical Development and Health; Science and Technology; Social and Emotional Development; and Social Studies.

Our Pre-K classes follow the Virginia Standards of Learning requirements.
